Support is available in English and Japanese.

For bug reports, include your macOS version, KoeSub version, selected source language, selected target language, selected audio source, and the steps that did not work as expected.

Basic Usage

  1. Open KoeSub from the Applications folder or the menu bar.
  2. Choose the source language and target language. The same language cannot be selected for both.
  3. Choose the audio source you want to translate, such as Mac audio, microphone input, or both when available.
  4. Use the menu bar control or configured keyboard shortcut to turn translation on.
  5. Turn translation off when you are finished.

Permissions

KoeSub may request macOS permissions for Screen Recording, Microphone, and Speech Recognition depending on the selected audio source and system configuration.

  • Screen Recording: allows macOS system audio capture used for translating Mac audio.
  • Microphone: allows microphone input when that source is selected.
  • Speech Recognition: allows Apple speech recognition frameworks to convert spoken audio into text before translation.

If translation does not start, open macOS System Settings and confirm that KoeSub has the required permissions.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does KoeSub start listening automatically when my Mac starts?

No. KoeSub may launch at login if enabled, but it stays idle. Audio capture and translation start only when you turn translation on.

Does KoeSub guarantee perfect translation?

No. KoeSub uses Apple system speech recognition and translation frameworks. Results can vary depending on audio quality, accent, speaker speed, background noise, and supported language availability.

Why do subtitles sometimes look incomplete or delayed?

Real-time speech recognition updates partial text while someone is still speaking. KoeSub translates finalized segments, so translated subtitles may appear slightly after the spoken words and may be revised as recognition stabilizes.

Can KoeSub translate both Mac audio and microphone input?

Yes, when the selected macOS version, device configuration, and permissions support the required audio capture path. Audio quality can vary depending on speaker volume, microphone placement, headphones, and background noise.

Does KoeSub upload my audio to Toybird Labs?

No. KoeSub does not upload your audio, transcripts, or translations to Toybird Labs servers.

Which languages are supported?

KoeSub supports the source and target languages shown inside the app. Availability may depend on Apple system language support and installed language resources.

Troubleshooting

  • If no subtitles appear, confirm that translation is turned on and that the correct audio source is selected.
  • If Mac audio is not recognized, check Screen Recording permission in macOS System Settings.
  • If microphone input is not recognized, check Microphone permission and the selected input device.
  • If translation is unavailable, confirm that the selected language pair is supported and that Apple language resources are available on your Mac.
  • If results are unstable, try using headphones, reducing background noise, or selecting only the audio source you need.
